Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 5-6 medium apples)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Crumble Topping
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving.
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of flour. Toss everything together thoroughly to evenly coat the apples with the spices and sugar mixture, then pour it into the prepared baking dish.
- Make Crumble Topping: In another medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Assemble: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling in the baking dish, making sure to cover the apples completely to create that signature crunchy topping.
- Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. If the crumble browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil to prevent burning.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes to set. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for an extra special treat.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet and tangy flavor.
- For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend and ensure oats are gluten-free.
- To enhance flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the apple mixture.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat before serving.
- Butter must be cold to achieve a crumbly topping texture.
