Ingredients
Scale
Caramel Apples
- 10 small apples (cold)
- 22 ounces soft caramels (624 grams; 2 (11-ounce) bags)
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream (57 grams)
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt (3 grams)
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract (2 grams)
Toppings (Optional)
- Chocolate drizzle
- Crushed graham crackers
- Crushed Oreo cookies
- Chopped nuts
- Mini chocolate chips or mini M&Ms
- Chopped candy bars
- Sprinkles or toasted coconut
- Chopped pretzels
Instructions
- Prepare apples: Thoroughly wash and dry the apples to ensure the caramel adheres properly. Insert a wooden stick or skewer into the stem end of each apple, which will serve as a handle for dipping and eating.
- Melt caramel mixture: In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the soft caramels and heavy whipping cream. Stir continuously until the caramels are fully melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the fine sea salt and pure vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of the caramel.
- Dip apples in caramel: Holding an apple by the stick, dip it into the warm caramel mixture, turning to coat evenly. Allow any excess caramel to drip back into the pan.
- Add toppings: Immediately roll or sprinkle the caramel-coated apple in your choice of toppings such as crushed graham crackers, chopped nuts, or mini chocolate chips while the caramel is still sticky.
- Set the apples: Place the dipped apples on a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool and set. You may refrigerate them briefly to help the caramel firm up faster.
- Optional chocolate drizzle: For an extra touch, melt some chocolate and drizzle it over the caramel apples after they have set. Allow the chocolate to harden before serving.
Notes
- Use cold apples to help the caramel set quickly and stick better.
- Do not overheat the caramel as it can burn; melt it gently over low heat.
- Customize toppings based on preference for varied textures and flavors.
- Store caramel apples in the refrigerator to keep them fresh, ideally consumed within 2–3 days.
