Description

This Crockpot French Onion Chicken is a comforting and easy-to-make dish featuring tender chicken breasts slow-cooked in a savory French onion soup base, topped with melted Swiss cheese and optional crispy fried onions. Perfect for a simple weeknight meal or a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Soup Base

  • 2 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup sliced onions
  • 10.5 oz can condensed French onion soup
  • 1 oz onion soup mix

Toppings (Optional)

  • 2-3 slices Swiss cheese (sliced)
  • French fried onions
  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Spray the inside of an 8-quart slow cooker with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place the chicken breasts evenly at the bottom.
  2. Add onions and soup: Add the sliced onions, onion soup mix, and condensed French onion soup over the chicken. Slightly stir to combine the ingredients.
  3. Cook the chicken: Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 6 hours, allowing the chicken to become tender and infused with the onion soup flavors.
  4. Add toppings: About 30 minutes before the cooking time ends, sprinkle French fried onions on top if using, and place one slice of Swiss cheese over each chicken breast to melt.
  5. Serve: Once cooking is complete, optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a burst of color and freshness before serving.

Notes

  • You can use either high or low setting on your slow cooker depending on your time availability.
  • French fried onions add a crispy contrast but can be omitted if you prefer a softer texture.
  • Swiss cheese can be substituted with Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
  • For a thicker sauce, remove the lid during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • This recipe pairs well with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
