Instructions
- Prepare the meat mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook 1 lb ground beef and 1 lb Italian sausage together, breaking apart the meat until well browned and cooked through. Stir in 1 tbsp Italian seasoning, 1 tsp garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to taste. Drain any excess fat and set the meat mixture aside to cool slightly.
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the deep-dish pie.
- Assemble the pie crust: Roll out the deep-dish pie crust and fit it into a deep-dish pie pan or a 9-inch round pie dish. Make sure the crust comes up the sides to hold all the filling ingredients.
- Layer the filling: Spread half of the cooked meat mixture evenly over the crust. Add half of the 8 oz pepperoni slices over the meat, then sprinkle with 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese. Spread 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara evenly over the cheese layer. Repeat the layering with the remaining meat, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, and pizza sauce.
- Top and finish assembly: Sprinkle 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese over the top to help create a golden crust. If using, brush the edges of the pie crust with the beaten egg to give a beautiful golden sheen during baking.
- Bake the pie: Place the assembled pie in the preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for 10 minutes before slicing into 8 pieces. This rest time helps the pie set and makes it easier to serve.
