Description

These Orange Glazed Butterflake Rolls are a delightful sweet treat perfect for brunch or a special holiday breakfast. Soft, buttery rolls with a hint of orange zest, topped with a sweet orange glaze, make for a deliciously indulgent pastry.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough:

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
2 large eggs
zest of 1 orange

For Layering:

1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)

Orange Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar
2–3 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour with sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, warm the milk, water, and softened butter until just warm (about 110°F).

Add the warm liquid to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.

Beat in eggs and orange zest, then gradually add remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.

  3. Assembly: Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal portions.
  4. Roll each portion into a small circle or oval, brush with melted butter, and stack 3–4 pieces slightly overlapping.

Fold the stack in half and place vertically into a greased muffin tin.

    Repeat with remaining dough.

Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes.

  5. Baking: Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake rolls for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Glaze: While rolls bake, whisk powdered sugar, orange juice, and vanilla to make the glaze.
  7. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add 1/2 tsp orange extract to the glaze.
  • These rolls are best enjoyed warm but can be reheated in a low oven.
  • Dough can be prepared ahead and refrigerated overnight.
