Ingredients
Scale
For the French Toast:
- 4 slices white sandwich bread (preferably stale)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp milk
For the Filling and Topping:
- Nutella, enough to spread generously on all slices
- 16 marshmallows, halved horizontally
- Additional marshmallows for topping (optional)
- Chocolate sauce for drizzling (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Egg Mixture: In a shallow dish large enough to hold the bread slices, combine the egg and milk. Whisk until thoroughly blended to ensure an even coating on the bread.
- Spread Nutella: Generously spread Nutella on all four slices of bread, covering one side of each slice to provide a rich, chocolaty base for the s’mores filling.
- Add Marshmallows: Place the marshmallow halves on two of the Nutella-covered bread slices with the cut (sticky) side facing up. This helps the marshmallows melt evenly during cooking.
- Heat Butter in Pan: Place a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add butter. Allow it to melt completely and get hot but not smoking, which will help achieve a golden crust on the toast.
- Dip and Place Bottom Bread: Take the two bread slices with marshmallows and quickly dip the bottom side (the side without Nutella or marshmallows) into the egg mixture, soaking it slightly. Immediately place these slices into the hot pan, marshmallow side up.
- Complete the Sandwich: Quickly dip the remaining two Nutella-covered bread slices in the egg mixture on the side without Nutella, then place them Nutella-side down on top of the marshmallows in the pan, forming a sandwich. The egg-dipped side should face upward so it cooks evenly when flipped.
- Press Lightly: Gently press down on the sandwiches with a spatula to help distribute heat through the center, melting the marshmallows inside. Avoid pressing too hard to prevent the filling from oozing out.
- Cook First Side: Cook for about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes until the bottom bread turns golden brown and crisp.
- Flip and Cook Other Side: Carefully flip the sandwich to cook the other side for around 2 minutes until golden brown and heated through.
- Check Marshmallow Melt: The marshmallows inside should be soft and gooey even if no oozing occurs immediately. The heat retained in the sandwich continues to melt them after cooking.
- Serve: Serve the S’mores French Toast immediately. Optionally, top with extra marshmallows and drizzle with chocolate sauce to enhance the s’mores flavor and presentation.
Notes
- Using slightly stale bread helps the slices absorb the egg mixture without falling apart.
- Cook over medium-high heat to get a nice golden crust while melting the marshmallows slowly inside.
- Do not press too hard with the spatula to avoid the marshmallow filling from oozing out and making a mess in the pan.
- Extra marshmallows and chocolate sauce are optional toppings but highly recommended for an authentic s’mores taste.
- This recipe serves 2 but can easily be scaled up for more servings.
