Description
This Whole 30 Roasted Cabbage with Chicken Sausage recipe is a simple, wholesome meal combining tender roasted cabbage, sweet apples, and savory chicken sausage. Roasting enhances the natural flavors, while fennel and celery seeds add aromatic depth. Perfect for a quick, nutritious dinner with minimal prep and cook time.
Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables and Fruit
- 1/2 large head of green cabbage
- 1 medium apple, skinned
- 1/2 medium onion
Seasonings and Oil
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon fennel seed
- 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Protein
- 1 package of Aidells’ Chicken & Apple Sausage
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425º F to ensure it reaches the right temperature for roasting the cabbage and cooking the sausages evenly.
- Prepare Ingredients: Slice the half head of cabbage into manageable pieces. Dice the peeled apple and half the onion into small, uniform pieces to ensure even cooking and flavor distribution.
- Combine on Sheet Pan: Place the sliced cabbage, diced apple, diced onion, olive oil, fennel seed, celery seed, salt, and pepper on a sheet pan. Toss everything together thoroughly to coat the vegetables and fruit evenly with oil and spices.
- Initial Bake: Bake the mixture in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. This allows the cabbage to start softening and the apples and onions to caramelize slightly.
- Add Sausages: Carefully remove the sheet pan from the oven. Toss the cabbage mixture again to redistribute it, then place the chicken sausages on top of the roasted vegetables.
- Final Bake: Return the sheet pan to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the sausages are thoroughly heated and slightly browned. Serve immediately while hot for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Using Aidells’ Chicken & Apple Sausage complements the apple and fennel flavors nicely; however, any similar chicken sausage can be used.
- If you prefer spicier sausages, they can be substituted to add heat.
- For a crispier texture, broil the sausages for the last 2-3 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning.
- This dish pairs well with a simple green salad or roasted root vegetables for a fuller meal.
